Abstract:

Transforming an existing building into a sustainable high-performance facility requires a comprehensive approach. Essential strategies include collaboration across all organizational levels, conducting ASHRAE Levels 1, 2, & 3 Energy Audits, identifying and implementing targeted improvements to the building itself, the HVAC system, upgrading system efficiency, enhancing comfort for both employees and guests, and how to pay for it. These efforts can reduce operational costs and leverage available tax incentives. Maintaining rigorous quality assurance is also vital to achieve optimal outcomes. Attendees will learn the “Why and How of Transforming an Existing Building into a High-performing Facility” and more, including what to think about in the design of new buildings and systems. Attendees will also find out “What is the similarity between a facility manager or building engineer and an HVAC system”.

Bio:

James L. Newman, CEM, LEED AP BD+C, OPMP, BEAP, FASHRAE, FESD — Managing Partner. Jim Newman is one of the country’s most experienced energy efficiency and green building professionals. Known as the “Dean of Green,” Jim is a national and international speaker, trainer, building consultant, and a recognized expert on energy conservation and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, sustainability and reliability, Indoor Air Quality (IAQ), and proper maintenance and operation of building systems.

Jim is Owner/Managing Partner of Newman Consulting Group headquartered in Farmington Hills, MI. He is a Certified Energy Manager (CEM), a LEED Accredited Professional (LEED AP BD+C), an ASHRAE Distinguished Lecturer (DL), an Operations and Performance Management Professional (OPMP) and a Building Energy Assessment Professional (BEAP). Jim has been recognized by industry peers as a Fellow of ASHRAE (FASHRAE) and a Fellow of the Engineering Society of Detroit (FESD). Jim was inducted into Marquis Who’s Who in America in 2022 and received their Lifetime Achievement Award in 2023 for “biographees who have achieved career longevity and demonstrated unwavering excellence in their chosen fields”. He received a BSME from Tufts University, Boston, MA, and continued his education for an MBA degree at the University of Detroit and Wayne State University in Detroit.
